“Angels Unawares” is a real-sized bronze sculpture created by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz, which represents a group of migrants and refugees of various cultural and racial origins from diverse historical periods. They are together, shoulder to shoulder, curled up in a raft. Among this diverse crowd, a pair of angel wings emerge from the center, suggesting the presence of the sacred. This sculpture was an initiative of the Migrants and Refugees Section and was inaugurated by Pope Francis on September 29th, 2019, on the occasion of the 105th World Day of Migrants and Refugees.
At La Machi we participated in the statues inauguration’s press campaign in Saint Peter’s Square, the strategic approach to the launch, the writing of a press release and the creation and production of a video campaign. Part of the strategy included placing a QR code on the statue for tourists and spectators, so than, when scanned, they could learn more about the work. Along with the campaign we also developed the angelsunawares.org website.
